In December 2018, we were honoured to unveil a permanent memorial to the men interned at Warth Mills in 1940, and in particular those who lost their lives on the SS Arandora Star.
The sculpture, created by Stephen Charnock of Scartworks Ltd, was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Jigsaw Homes Group, Bury Council and MCI Developments. It is on a new housing development adjacent to the original Warth Mills site.
Unveiling the statue, Councillor Rishi Shori said: “Local history is an integral part of a community and this superb memorial, albeit remembering unhappier times, will add to our knowledge.”
